Golf - The Way It Was Originally Intended
An Authentic Scottish Links Golf Club - Established1910
Private 18-Hole Golf Club located in Harrison Township, Michigan offering recreational and social enjoyment for members by maintaining the highest quality standards possible. Beginning as a nine hole course in 1910 named Riverview Golf Club by founder Thomas Shoemaker. Riverview Golf Club (now Gowanie Golf Club) was a charter member of the Detroit District Golf Association - now known as the Golf Association of Michigan.
The 1920's brought Dave Millar, born in Arbroath on Scotland's North Sea Coast, less than 10 miles from the famed Carnoustie Championship Links. He became the golf professional and renamed it Gowanie (pronounced GOW-nee) which roughly translated means "field of daisies."
Millar worked on many courses throughout Michigan and designed Milham Park municipal course in Kalamazoo, known as one of the most highly regarded public courses in the state.
In the late 1930's the course was purchased by the late Ross Axford who owned a golf course construction company that built many courses around the country for Robert Trent Jones.
Today as in past years Gowanie continues the tradition of hosting golf events such as US Open Qualifiers that brought in professional tour stars like Mike Souchak and Ted Kroll. Today Gowanie continueally hosts Golf Association of Michigan State Amateur Qualifiers and Net Team events.
Gowanie is a golfer's club, no pool or tennis courts, just people who love golf. The course is tight and demands accuracy. Complemented with a comfortable clubhouse with wonderful staff, great food, and a friendly family-oriented membership. Easily accessible from all points of the Metropolitan area.
Gowanie Golf Club continues its rich history being one of the oldest private clubs in the district. Its 18 holes total 6414 yards from the tips with a course rating of 71.4 that will present a challenge to golfers of every skill level. Four sets of tees are available to accomodate beginner to scratch golfers.
Members enjoy the camaraderie of fellow golfers in weekly league events, member tournaments throughout the season in addition to social events throughout the year. From the casual game after work or the challenge of your weekend foursome see what private club membership offers in course condition and availability. The Club's USGA Golf Professional, Paul Prigel, is available to assist with clothing, equipment and instructional needs of your entire family. A very successful Junior Golf program is available during the summer to bring youngsters into the game and extend family activities.
